Artist Statement

Throughout my career as an artist I have explored my own identity of a working class women incorporating themes of the domestic and ritual. Whlist I explore multiple mediums I describe myself as a video and performance artist creating content for onlne vewing or physical installation. It is the duality of this practice which is interesting to me as the creator has a barrier with the online audience where as none exists when performing live.

I believe to be succesfull in this online age it is important to cater to both audiences.

Within my work I love to create a dual narrative. Where at first the veiwer believes the meaning is transparant but upon further inspection there is much more to be seen. I do this through connotations using location, body language and the spoken word to draw on social history, religion or class. As I enjoy playing with the audience leaving clues and pieces of my dark humour. An example of this can be seen in the work featured in this application: The video explores a pseudo-religion that worships the domestic space. Its rituals of domestic tasks in the mundane setting irreverently highlight conversations around class, religion and uncelebrated labour. This radical transformation shifts the mundane into the grand and causes the audience to question their relationship with the subject matter.

I draw on the work which I have submitted for this application as its themes are what informs my practice. As a working class women it is a challenge to earn my place within art sector but I use this to motivate myself and create my pieces.

It is my hope to take this further and become a professional as I am at the beginning of my artist career.
